How do I do a fresh winXPpro install on an hp?

By anansimann ·
I reformated the hard drive on a hp pavilion 7940, after removing it from the computer. I installed winXPpro and it works fine - until i put it back in the hp machine. then it don't even boot up. when i put the hd in a generic ibm compatible itworks like a charm. Is there a special code I need to type in at the time of installation for the hp machine to read the op sys?

No special codes.

You are ALWAYS best off installing Windows XP on the target machine.

The issue for your specific situation is that the hardware is different enough between your generic PC and the HP that Windows is attempting to load drivers for the wrong hardware and then just hangs.

You can "try" removing the hardware devices that are different between the HP and the generic, then shut down and move the hard drive to the HP.

Still, all in all, you are best off formatting the drive and installing XP with the hard drive installed in the HP system.

Hi - In similar situations I have had success with following the instructions detailed here -->

Obviously you will need to carry out the above instructions with the hard drive in one of the generic IBM compatible machines so you can get into Windows.

This removes all the device specific hard disk drivers with the default Windows drivers.

Once that has been done, put the drive back into your Pavilion and hopefully you will get a successful boot of Windows.

Good Luck,

I've completed all the steps listed in article 11,and I've copied the registry file printed in red as ".reg", but each time i try to merge that file into the registry, I get a reject saying it is not a registry file. I am using winXPpro. Do I need to do something different?

intstall the drive in the laptop, boot from XP cd and run a windows repair. I've seen this work before.
