how do i find the product key?

i am reinstalling WinXP Pro for a client but since this pc was given to them by a sick father who no longer needed it, i don’t have a product key. is there a (free) way to find out what the product key is? winXP was apparently an upgrade, the OEM sticker is for Millenium.
