how do I fix a hard drive?

By Crockettma ·
My daughter turned her computer on last weekend, only to find out that it says there isn't any hard drive, only the cd rom and floppy drive. She doesn't have internet access on that computer so it probably isn't a virus. I went in and made sure that all the connections were secure. I even went to the point that I changed the cable going to the motherboard, without any result. What could have caused it, and is there any way to restore it?

You can try booting the computer and in the bottom left corner, hit the key to enter setup,This will open the CMOS control kpanel check the configuration to see if hard drive is listed, set to auto.
If there is no response from this, insert the startup disk an at command prompt type SYS C:,you can also run scandisk from the command prompt,if none of the above work, look to buy a new hard drive

One other thing you could try...

Sometimes the starter brushes go out on the hard drive and will not start when the platters are in a certain position. The hard drive could be fully operational; the drive just can't start spinning. When you turn on the computer, listen to the hard drive to see if it sounds like it's spinning up. If it's not, hold the hard drive securely in your hand, and twist your wrist hard (which will spin the internal platters of the hard drive and put the starting brushes in a different location). If this fixes it, your hard drive will still need to be replaced as soon as possible, but this will allow you to get the information that is on the current drive for now.
