How do I get a job in California?

By leon_guerrero ·
I want to move to California from Hawaii, but I want to make sure I have a job there first.

I've been working in the IT industry for more than 10 years (3+ yrs. Network Administrator ~200 users, 4 yrs. Computer Operator, and 3 yrs. PC Repair Technician).

I have an Associates Degree in Business Computer Information Systems, A+, Network+, and MCP certifications.

I posted my resmue on monster.com, computerjobs.com, and headhunter.com. Its been three months now and no responses at all not one? I thought there are many jobs available in California in the IT field?

Is it because I dont have a BS degree? Do I have enough experience in the IT field to work in California? Am I asking for too much money for my experience (28K)? Do I needto get higher certifications? Please tell me why nobody wants me and what I can do to make myself more marketable to California companies?

Thanks,
JLG

As a wild guess, I'd say that noone wants to fly you in for an interview. You are looking for a job at a level for which employers don't tend to pay relocation costs.

I would suggest that you either take the leap of faith and move first, or makeit very clear that you don't expect any relocation reimbursement.

Oh, and by the way, you are about 15-20k low on your asking price. At least you would be in the Midwest.

First off, make sure you're resume is okay. If you haven't read any books/articles on resumes, or had a career professional look at it, you may have some trouble there you didn't even know about. (Common mistakes are people being too modest. You shouldn't exaggerate the truth, but certainly don't be modest. No one else will be.)
Second, try using dice.com or techiegold.com. I've had more success with those sites.
Third, you are definitely asking too little. With your experience you should look at the 50K range. (around the SF Bay Area.)
Fourth, don't just wait around for replies....actively search those sites and apply to job postings. Job hunting should be a full time job.
Good Luck!
