How do I get a SharePoint new column's data to show up in the task?

When viewing the SharePoint tasks within Outlook, a new column added within SharePoint does not appear in Outlook. Outlook only shows those columns that are canned. Hence, I navigated to Customize Current View > Show Field > User-defined field in folder > New Field and added the new field. The field appears in Outlook but my problem is, no data is coming through. I've tried to resync SharePoint and Outlook to no avail. Any thoughts.
