How do I get a Vista laptop to open an external XP hard drive (both HP)?

I’ve connected an HP Pavilion Media Center hard drive (xp) to a Compaq laptop (Vista). The laptop recognizes the HP_RECOVERY section of the drive, but not the main portion. It shows up as Local Disk(G:) and with corrupted file or directory, but I know this is not the case.
