How do I get back to the default desktop display settings

By amrgf4556 ·
The desktop display settings have been accidently reset on an XP system which now has all of the background in black. The appearance tab is blacked out completely, and I can't see anything in order to reset the properties.

Right click on the desktop, choose a theme (Windows XP, Windows Classic, etc.), that will in general reset your desktop. &ou may have to go in and reset your screen resolution too.

I would

Is this a limited account and has the administrator done this for a reason.
If not.

I would try and run some sort of malware scan.

I have also seen this behaviour in a non genuine version of Windows before.

Thanks,

Thax all for the input.

The problem was that all the input tabs had black backgrounds with black text. I couldn't see what was happening or error messages. I tried all the suggestions supplied as much as I could. But none worked. I ended up just doing a simple system restore from several days before the incident. That got it back to the previous settings.
