Question

Locked

how do i get my pictures back?

By jdpowers41 ·
I thought my computer had crashed, so i removed the hdd and plugged it into another computer, found out it is ok. I have hundreds of pictures on it. At this point, I was unable to see the pictures, so i tried going thru safe mode, then changed some settings which allow me to see the pictures in read mode only. how do i change the settings back so i dont have to be in safe mode to be able to see them..and can copy them onto a disc? it wont let me right now, says they are locked. I know I should have made notes of the changes I made, but I didnt. hard lesson learned. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ownership?

by TobiF In reply to how do i get my pictures ...

I guess you have Windows?
Things that are stored within someones user profile will be somewhat restricted for access by other users.
But with an administrator account, one can take ownership, and then handle the files.

Another approach might be to boot a computer from a Linux-disk with suitable drivers. Since Linux bothers less about Windows profiles, this may be an easier approach.

Try one of these Linux Distro's as a Live CD

As you didn't tell us what OS is in use you'll need to search the OS Makers Web Site/Help Files for how to Take Ownership of these Files while they are on a Slaved Drive. You need to look at the Current OS on this, not the one that was loaded onto the damaged HDD.

PhotoRec

by jedler In reply to how do i get my pictures ...

Hi,

you could use PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec) to recover photos in case of a file system damage. It is included in PartedMagic (http://partedmagic.com/doku.php), a live Linux distribution.

I already recovered a lot of files with that. It works really well.

Regards,

Jens
