How do I get rid of this infection?

By wompai ·
Ey guys

I have got a pc that s infected by malware. I've got two problems:
1: All search results are redirected to ads and other crap.
2: Components of mulitple anitvirus systems are not responding or cannot be started.

I've tried Avira, Avast and AVG. All of these do not respond and their components cannot be succesfully started, so I cannot detect nor remove the malware.

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

right off the top, you're using anti virus programs to try to remove malware. Try an anti malware program...like malwarebytes for starters http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
spybot S & D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/ownmirrors1/index.html
and maybe ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

I would run ccleaner first, get rid of all your temp files and whatnot, then malwarebytes and follow up with spybot. If things still seem stubborn, try them in safe mode. Let us know how it goes.

Reponse To Answer

I ran the ccleaner first, following instructions in second paragraph. It ran for a period of time(ten minutes or more) and then the blue screen of death. My computer now boots to the opening of the Vista OS and then again the BSOD. I tried several boot discs to no avail.
I now have a new HDD and Windows 7.
What did I do wrong?

You need to hit the computer with a Boot Disc

Ideally one that has some form of Scanner in it so look at this TR Article here by Michael Kassner on Rescue CD's

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/security/rescue-cds-tips-for-fighting-malware/3803

Personally I like FSecure but any of the ones listed will work quite well and as the OS isn't involved any infections are not running so they can not interfere with the Scanner working correctly.

Just a word of caution though as the Installed OS isn't actually working it's possible to remove a critical part of it if the infection is in something that Windows requires so you may be required to do a In Place Install after you clean the system.

Kaspersky TDSSkiller

Download it from the website and run it from Safe Mode. A rootkit can reinstall malware even though you clean the malware off the system. Also, you might try cleaning the hard drive with another pc as the main system. That's how i do it.

Microsoft Malicouse Software Tool

by TheChas In reply to How do I get rid of this ...

Usually when mal-ware prevents anti-virus software from installing, it is a virus or worm.

I would start with the Microsoft Malicious software removal tool.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=16

While it does not detect or remove every virus or worm, it does remove the most active each month.

I download it and burn it to a CD then scan the suspect system with no network connection.

Another option is the Avira Rescue System.

http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system

This builds a bootable CD that runs a live Linux and then can scan your hard drives for a large number of viruses.

NOTE: If Avira removes key system files, you may need to use recovery media to be able to boot into Windows.

Once the system is clean, make sure that a current AV program is installed and that all patches are up to date for all programs and not just Windows. Even for dial-up, I always recommend a firewall in addition to AV software.
