How do I get win2000 off the boot record

By sjkell76 ·
I hope someone has an answer to this one, Microsoft apparently doesn't!

I had a hard drive that was in two partitions. One had win98 and the other win2000. I was checking out win2000 for my job and do not need to any longer. I then went to remove the partition and place Linux there. I successfully installed Linux but the Boot Menu still says Win2000 and Win98. I can no longer boot to 2000. I am still able to boot to win98.

I have tried going to a command prompt and typing in fdisk/ mbr. It doesn't appear to work. I can not load Linux without the boot disk and I did install Lilo without any error messages. It appears as though there are 2 boot records? Please help.

To eliminate the Windows 2000 stuff: Assuming you have Win98 on your first partition C: and this is the "active" partition (the one that boots): From a DOS window in Win98 (or a Win98 startup floppy), use "sys C:" then reboot. You should also delete hidden/system files NTLDR, BOOT.INI, and NTDETECT from C:

However, if you want to dual boot with Linux, you'll have to figure out how to do that - I've never done so.

I assume you have win98 on your first partition. When installing LILO specify the win98 (first partition) for it to be installed on. Thats the only thing i can imagine went wrong here.

I have installed LILO on the MBR and it still has not removed the windows 2000 menu. Now I select windows at LILO boot, and then the windows 2000 dual boot menu pops up.

Partition Magic will remove and of the partitions you want, as well as boot records.

Secondly, I have WINNT, Win98 and Linuz on the same computer, same hard drive, with 3 partitions. Boot Magic and partition magic are running as well. Install 98 first, then NT, then Linux (v7.0, which come with a visual partitioning software, which will inturn see any boot recoerds and you can remove them with clicks, very easy to use)

Hope this helps,
Eric
