How do I go from NT 4.0 back to Win 9x

By georgeclinton ·
I've inherited a few machines that have been upgraded to NT 4.0. All these machines seem to have the original Windows folders. I would like to remove NT 4.0 and go back to the original configuration. These machine
DO NOT have a CD Rom. Can this be done using some sort of a uninstall feature?

There is no "uninstall" for NT 4.0. If the drive is formatted as NTFS, then you will have to reformat to get Win9x on the drive. If the drive is FAT and you have means to copy the original install files to the drive, then you can delete everythingon the drive and install from th esource files.

If you can't connect to a CD-ROM drive across a network then another approach is to buy or rent or borrow a CD drive that plugs into the parallel port. As mentioned in the previous post, IF your current drive is not NTFS, then you can just copy the CD onto spare space on the HDD and run SETUP.

BTW, try as i have, i just do not have luck running the install from the CD through the parallel port. It seems this is just too slow or flaky and eventually crashes. Better to load to the HDD.

hi,
if win nt4.0 is installed in a diffrenet folder, then u can renmae it like "del.win"

and edit the file named as "boot.ini"(u can find this file in root drive,i.e is "c:\") by removing a line in this file which refers "Microsoft Windows NT4.0"

before editing this file(boot.ini) u need to remove the attributes of this file by typing "attrib -h -r -s boot.ini"
on dos prompt.

after u r done with tihs restart the pc and system will start with win98

The other message all say the same thing: reformat the hard drive. But there is another solution that they have over looked, run a dual boot of Windows NT and what ever version of windows you want to put on it.
