How do I link 2 computers?

By mhiggins ·
I want to link two stand-alone Win98 desktop computers and copy files from one machine to the other. I have the cable to do it and have done this in the past, but do not remember the procedure. Do I gain access to "Machine A" by going through "My Computer" on "Machine B"? If so, what next.

What sort of connection do you wish to know about? Direct Serial cable connection or RJ45 Network/TCP-IP type of connection?

You need to be a little more specific on what type of cable you have. If you mean a network cable (cat5) then it can be used to connect two PC's with network cards as long as it is a crossover cable, specially wired for this purpose. Both systems will need a client, protocol, and file and print services added to their network configurations to allow two way transfers. They would then connect by simply typing \\othersystemname in the run box and pressing enter.
If you have a null modem cable, the two systems connect using RAS. Dial-up networking must be installed on both systems, and one must be configured as the "client", the other as the host. The client then configures a direct connect that "calls" the host.

More info would be nice.

I felt the words "stand-alone" were specific enough. Sorry for the confusion I have received my answer from another source.

I agree with both answers, but although each of the answers are with strong merit and stand to reason within a broader network topology, those answers are outside the scope of the question.

Using the "Direct Cable Connection" feature in Win98 [...>Communications>Direct Cable Connection]should solve the problem by providing a connection to other computers via a parallel or serial port.

If you don't alreay have the Direct Cable Connection installed, install it from the Win98 CD.

I hope that helps, and best of luck!
