How do I revive files off a hard drive..

By Monte Admin ·
..when the Master Boot record was erased by a virus. I was able to go in using Norton unearse and undelete a few directorys. What I didn't know was, when I closed the program I wouldn't be able to go back into the program and unerase files from directories I had restored. Any thoughts? I have permission to take the drive somewhere or fix it myself. Are there companies that will be able to get in to the drive and get the info off?

-You may just try to boot from a diskette with FDISK on it, and try FDISK /MBR, which puts a copy of the Master Boot Record over the defective one.
-Or check www.ontrack.com, they have a good reputation. They check the magnetical data, and don't care about the existance of a FAT or a boot record or whatever.

Jim,

Thank you very much. Ontrack seems like the way for me to go first. I have probably tried too many things on the drive that I should just pull out the big guns and it seems like they can help.

Yes, FDISK/MBR would be a good thing to try. Also try installing the drive in another comp as slave and see if you can access it in order to fix or undelete any files there. here are some things to try. Download or purchase programs designed to recover your data. PowerQuest makes the utility Drive Image which in some cases can be used to recover data from a hard drive.
Utilize a service of a local data recovery company or an out of state data recovery company. One word of caution is that these services can sometimes be very expensive. It is only recommended they be used if the data is extremely important. Below is a listing of a few major data recovery companies.
