How do I set up a win 98 Print server?

By g.vilfranc ·
I'm a young pc technician working underneath a master network administrator/pc technician. Today, we set up about 25 computers on a win98 based network connected to a hub. He's assigned me to setting up a seperate pc as a print server. How do I go about doing this? I mean, I have an idea, but at the same time, I'm not sure where to start. The printer is there and everything. I honestly didn't want to do this, but only stupid people don't ask questions. Can someone help me or point me in the right direction?

take the printer and connect it to one of the pc's on the network. assuming that particular pc you are going to connect the printer to, is also connected to the network. go into the control panel (under start, settings, control panel) and open by clicking on the network icon. select the file and print sharing....TAB and check mark the i want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s). click ok, till you close the network window then restart when windows give's you the option.

step 2. is setting the printer on the network. assuming again you have installed the driver for the printer, go to start, setting printers. highlight the newly installed printer and right click and choose sharing. you should be able to take it from there. have fun!!!!

That sounds about right, but remember that Win98 is not really a server, and it will only allow 10 simultaneous external connections. If people are in the habit of watching the print queues, the 11th user will not connect. You may actually want to use three printers connected to three of the computers, and spread the users over the three printers.

Good luck.

Windows 98 is not such a good option to setup a Print Server since it won't allow you than many connections at the same time, you've better think about Windows NT which will give you the posibility for all the users on your network besides the security level it will provide to you and your final users.
Anyway, just install Windows 98SE, the install the printer drivers and make sure it prints ok.
Now, configure the NIC, I assume you're using WINS and TCP/IP, ok, assing this pc a valid IP address, the same subnet mask as the other pcs on your network.
Now share the printer, go to Control Panel, Network ... share printers. It will as you to restart your PC, once this is done go to Control Panel, Printers, Sharing, you could assume share itto Everyone, click ok.
Ready, now go to each "Workstation" and browse the network, and attach or capture the port, as you prefer.
If you have any doubt or question please e-mail me back

Good luck,

@lberto

Win98 network on a hub and sharing one printer off of a Win98 computer WoW your brave...
It will work and it will also keep your working. Another option is to add a Jetdirect card to the printer which will allow you to connect it to your network and run Hewlett-Packard Web JetAdmin Software 6.5 (see www.hp.com) and make sure your printer has as much memory as you can get on it.
