How do I share my DVD drive with another pc on the same network? We both use VISTA. I have set my DVD drive up to share.

You need to run the Network Setup Wizard

And after you run it on the first system make a note of the Security Code that was given to you and then run the Network Setup Wizard on the second Computer telling it that it's part of an existing network.

Then when prompted enter the Security Code that you got when you ran the Network Setup Wizard on the first computer.

After you have finished running the Network Setup Wizard you will probably need to reboot and then share whatever it is you want to share with whatever Security you want.

the Manual way of setting this up

by markp24 In reply to how do I share DVD drive

Hi,

(Oh Smeg please correct anything you see i may state in error)
(This is one of many ways to do it)
on machine 1 with the DVD, Note the IP address (cmd prompt, type ipconfig) (if you see 0.0.0.0 or self assigned 169.x.x.x address, then set a static address (ie 192.168.1.5)
I recommend for testing this, disable the firewall initially)
then go to "computer" icon, right click the dvd drive, choose share - set the share name up (ie dvddrive)

go to machine #2 (no dvd)
goto a cmd prompt note the ip address. If it is dhcp assigned and resembles the first 3 octest of the 1st machine you ok
if its self assigned or 0.0.0.0 the(if you see 0.0.0.0 or self assigned 169.x.x.x address, then set a static address (ie 192.168.1.10)

next click start->run then type\\192.168.1.5 ( or the ip of the system that has the shared dvd)
and it should appear in a windows , right click on the icon for DVDdrive and choose map network drive, choose a drive letter (ie Z: and select "reconnect at login" if you want that.
and thats it)

notes: setting your ip address

goto control panel - network - choose the network adapter you and to use - choose properties
then choose TCP/IP- properties then setup the fields as needed (usually you want the subnet mask to be 255.255.255.0, to make things easy, default gateway, should be you router address, (a common default is 192.168.1.1) click ok,ok,and that should do it
