How do I stop a windows update that XP has already started downloading?

By imalik ·
I recently reinstalled XP SP2 but forgot to turn off Automatic Updates (which is the setting I prefer) before going online. Did turn it off shortly thereafter but by then it had already started downloading. This download now resumes the moment I go online. Is there any way of stopping this? Many thanks in advance.

its best to let it run

you'll get into a loop where the machine will always want to download that update.

remove the unwanted update with add/remove programs.

note: you can always disable Windows Update or turn it on or change settings at any time. It does not effect current downloads. only future one.

Thank you. I suppose I'll just have to let it do what it wants to do.

Control panel>Administrative tools>Services

Right click on "Automatic Updates"

On the startup type choose disabled and apply changes

True. But the problem is that although I turned off automatic updates shortly after reinstalling XP SP2, it had already started downloading and will keep on doing it till the current download ends. It won't download any new updates though because the automatic feature is now off. Although I've currently taken that machine off-line, I believe I will eventually have to let it finish.
