I take it you can get to the Internet on some computer (how would you be posting a message otherwise). Does your computer have virus software on it now? If so, you can go to the company who makes your software and download a virus definition file and make bootable floppy disk.

You yourself will never be able to do this. You need to install a good Anti-Virus software package. I usually recommend Symantec (Norton) Anti-Virus. Almost all Anti-Virus packages detect viruses by searching for either specific types of activityor file signatures that match those included in its library of known virus signatures. This search (or scan) normally occurs as files are accessed or executed. If a virus (or virus-like activity) is detected, one of several things may occur. The file might be able to be cleaned (which deletes the virus from the file but still allows you to use the file. The file might be quarentined. This could allow you to submit the file to the AntiVirus software publisher to be checked. The file might be deleted. Hopefully it isn't an important file. This normally occurs when the file itself is the virus, rather than just being a normal file that has been infected.
Not being able to access the Net has two impacts on you, one good, one not so good.
Not so good: Antivirus software publishers regularly update their virus signiture libraries as new viruses are detected. In is usually very difficult (if not impossible) to update the virus signiture library on your computer without access to the Net.
Good: The Net is usually the primary route of entry for a virus to your computer, either through email, or through file downloads. Unless you regularly accept files (on floppy or CD) from people you don't know, the chances of a virus infecting your computer very, very slim.
By the way, while wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS will get rid of most viruses, there are some particularly nasty ones out there that will infect the boot sector or MBR of a hard drive. You must do a low-level format of the drive to get rid of these.
Hope this answers your questions.
