How do you grant access via MS Proxy?

By kendaro ·
We currently have our proxy server configured so that when a user fires up their browser they have to login to get authenticated. We need to eliminate the login while still granting users access to the Internet via the proxy server. I know that MSProxy Client can help us there by using NT authentication to get access. What I need to know is there some other way that we're overlooking. Thanks in advance.

How do you grant access via MS Proxy?

If you enable access control in MS Proxy, you can then grant automatic access by NT user ID or by global group by adding users or groups to the Access list. The user will not be asked to log in when they open their browser unless they are not logged into the network with an NT User ID that has been granted access. IOW, if Joe is on the access list, but Jane isn't, Joe won't get a login box, but Jane will. You don't need Proxy Client on the workstations if you're only using Proxy Server for Internet access through a browser - just set up your browser to connect via the Proxy Server, as I assume you already have. The Proxy Client is only needed for programs that require a Winsock Proxy client to access the Internet rather than going directly through a browser connection. Hope this helps!

Assuming you are using Proxy 2.0 and IIS 4.0,

1) Open the properties for the default web site in the IMC.

2) In the Directory Security tab, click on the edit button in the "Anonymous Access and Authentication Control" section.

3) In the Anonymous Access and Authentication Control page, make sure the "Allow Anonymous Access" and "Basic Authentication" checkbox is checked. The Windows NT Challenge/Response should be unchecked.

4) Click the edit button for the "Allow Anonymous Access"section. Click the browse button. Look for the IUSR_<servername> account (use local account database if its a member server) and add it. The password field should already be filled in. Make sure the "Enable automatic password synchronization" check box is checked. Click ok.

5) Click edit in the "Basic Authentication" section. In the "Basic Authentication" page, put in the domain name. Click ok.

6) Click ok (x2) to accept changes and to get back to IMC.

7) Open properties page for Web Proxy. In the

7) Open properties page for Web Proxy. In the Permissions tab, check the "Enable Access Control" check box. Select the WWW in the Protocol: section. In the Grand Access to: section, add Everyone with the edit button. Click OK to accept.

Restart the web proxy and web server.
