How do you setup a firewall for a shared

    Locked

    by north1 ·

I have a shared Internet Gateway at my home LAN and would like to set up a Firewall on the Gateway Computer in order to protect my LAN. Any suggestions on what to use and how to use it? BTW all my PCs and laptops run on WindowsXP (some Pro, some Home ed.).

    Thanks in advance.

The best solution which comes with a pricetag is to buy a firewall device. I think they cost +_ $200.

Else you have to install e personal firewall like tiny or zone-alarm to protect the gateway computer.

If the gateway computer is a router there is a firewall built into it. Look it up in help of winxp.

Using the build in firewall of xp is good enough for most folks. There are some issues which are tricky to overcome for the average user though. I am not sure who your network is set up though. In a scenario where you have the gateway pc having to nic’s set where one nic is to the modem(if on broadband that is) and the other to the hub:
the one nic connection to the internet can be managed through properties, add the firewall to this one, but leave the other one(to the hub) firewall free because you do not need a firewall on this one for one reason, the other is that you will not be able to get the others to communicate if you use a firewall on it
