By thitch ·
I am trying to setup task scheduler to run a
backup job to a file on the network. It is setup to run at 10:30pm, but I come in, in the morning, and the backup program is up and asking me do I want to create a new job or to select a job. How do I shedule this part?

If you are talking about MSBackup that comes with Windows 9x, it cannot do unattended backups. I purchased Veritas Backup Exec Desktop to do unattended backups at home. You could write a DOS batch file, even using pkzip, and execute it from the task scheduler.

If you are using NT4, I've heard there are command parameters you can use to make an unattended backup but I don't remember what they are.

Check out the backup help file for the command line switches. Your best bet though is to use something like ARCserve or BackupExec. I tried scheduling using AT but gave up, not flexible enough and now use BackupExec - no problems since then

Backing up your files to a network server

You can have files on your hard disk automatically backed up to a network server by using a network service called a backup agent. You need to use the backup agent that your network administrator has set up on the server, either ARCserve or Backup Exec.

Your network administrator specifies how often backups are done. You specify which files should be backed up. Good lick.

Another program is 'evntime.exe.' that will run from scheduler. I used it for over 18 months. If you want, I can send it to you. It has a Word.doc file for documentation. It is easy to set up.

Click start help and select search (Alt + s) and type 'backup'.
This is the title of what you are looking for:
"Backing up your files to a network server"
hope this helps.
