Both VMware Player and Virtualbox are free downloads. They work with Windows or Linux as the underlying OS. Both set up a computer environment in software on your machine. Hence if your underlying OS is Windows, you can run any Linux OS (or OS's) and/or other instances of Windows in the virtual machine. You can switch between multiple virtual OS's. You can cut and paste from the underlying OS to a virtual OS and you can copy files from the underlying OS to the virtual OS. From the virtual OS you can also access your network, printers, CD/DVD drive and USB devices attached to your computer.
Download VMware Player here http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desktop_downloads/vmware_player/3_0

Download VirtualBox here (you want the PUEL edition, as the open source edition lacks USB support. Download the PUEL edition here http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
