How does virtualization work?

I been hearing and hearing about virtualization and im not sure if I understand the concept...

How can we utilize virtualization? is it like VMWare's Player?

What programs do support virtualization?

Both VMware Player and Virtualbox are free downloads. They work with Windows or Linux as the underlying OS. Both set up a computer environment in software on your machine. Hence if your underlying OS is Windows, you can run any Linux OS (or OS's) and/or other instances of Windows in the virtual machine. You can switch between multiple virtual OS's. You can cut and paste from the underlying OS to a virtual OS and you can copy files from the underlying OS to the virtual OS. From the virtual OS you can also access your network, printers, CD/DVD drive and USB devices attached to your computer.
