How far away are we from building actual light sabers?

I know they just added lasers to navel ships. So how far away do you guys figure we are from making real light sabers (even if they would be kind of useless)?

Since solid light is sort of impossible...

I'd say pretty far.
Of course, they've been able to stop photons in supercold substances, but making a sword out of that would be sort of impractical.

That would assume it is a laser of some sort

It could be a shaped energy field of some sort, light is just an after affect.

We just need to find a big enough geek.

If we give up on the swordyness...

I.e. it's not solid, and it's not neatly terminated, then it could be some kind of weaponized blowtorch... a plasma launcher could become a viable weapon if plate armor is somehow able to render bullets obsolete... the plasma would get in through joinings...
But the odds of that happening are zero.

The theory as to why swords became popular again is because people started having personal shields, rendering bullets useless.

Why does it stay in shape?
Now, it could be super dense plasma stuck in a weird-*** magnetic field... but that would make it pretty far away too.

Thats what I would assume too
