    HOW HOT IS HOT

    Locked

    by matt5968 ·

I have a AMD Athelon XP 1700 system. I have couple if intermal fans. The system is starting to lock up intermitenly. I noticed the bios says cpu temp is 120 f and intermal is 110 f.. What should the temps be to aviod problems.. thanks

That doesn’t sound TOO hot. Before the XP Athlon, AMD’s processors would run notoriously hot and would not shut off when they got too hot like Intel processors. Though, they did fix that a bit with the XP revision. Maybe try applying some Thermal Conductor stuff inbetween the CPU fan and the CPU. You can find it on the net or maybe a local computer store

When the lock ups occur can you toggle the NumLock key on and off. This works at the bios level and can help determine if the lock ups arehardware related. If you can, it may be software related, if not, MS says those are hardware related.

The average temperature for this AMD chip is 115 – 125 degres F.

Important Warning: Be Aware – AMD Athlon CPUs do not have the same type of automatic thermal protection / shutoff design as many previous CPUs and a single overheating incident can permanently damage your CPU. Proper cooling is critical. Even with a fan heatsink in place heavy CPU use can cause the CPU temperature to increase. Proper system & CPU cooling is critical.

A fan with aluminum heat sink is preferable over one with stainless steel.

make sure you have fans exhausting out of your case,& not just the power supply fan, it doesn’t cool the inside of the case.

it only adds to heat problems if you only have fans trying to pull air in, just think of a paper bag when you blow into it, your case is the same way, only so much air can come in. Better to have more being forced out, than in.

Also move the wires inside your case out of the path of the air flow if you can.

I have a 1st generation Athlon and it ran too hot and locked up regularly. I purchased a $30 heatsink/fan set from http://www.coolerguys.com/ and it dropped the CPU temp by over 20 degrees. I don’t know what model they have for an Athlon XP, but I think it’d be worth a look.

Most electonic devices will work fine at case temeratures up to 70 C (158 F).
This is the maximum working temperature for “commercial” grade components.
Military parts are often rated to 85C, and automotive may require 105C.

So, you are getting near to the point where you may need extra cooling to protect your PC investment.

Make sure you have a good flow of outside air into the case.
AMD has several thermal solution pdf files that you can download.

      Hi,

I know how you *feel* re the temperature! I recently moved from Intel to AMD and was shocked at the temperature my 1.4GHz Thunderbird reached.

Even now, with 3 case fans and a good quality heatsink, it still sits at around 55 degC (or 130degF) and gets as high as 67 degC (or 150degF) but I’ve never had a lockup that I’d say was caused by heat.

I was uneasy about it until I went to the following site with the following article…

      http://www.overclockers.com/tips400/

If you’re getting lockups, I’d say it’d be unlikely to be due to temperature. Not impossible, just very unlikely.

      Cheers,
      Tim.

It is important to consider the proper air flow for AMD systems is from the front to rear, and the number of fans is not nearly important as having the correct air flow. The air should enter the case from the front/bottom of case, run across the board/chip and exit out the rear/mid/top of a standard mid tower computer
