How long do people hold on to a consulting job?

I've got a consulting job offer from a west coast company. It requires 100% travel, pays 50% more than my current contract job. I've never done this before. I've worked a couple different contracts, but no travel.

My friend said it's the travel that eventually gets you, but the experience is good.

MY question is, what do we get out of consulting jobs, are they leading to better perm jobs? How long can most people hold on to consulting jobs, is the traveling and dealing with clients the major reason people quit consulting?

I've know people stay there for life, others who want a life.

It depends where you are in your life and your personal situation. Single people right out of university and older people who are empty nesters seem to be the majority of the people living out of a suitcase in the consulting game.

I've never been one of them, but have worked with many of them.

The pay is often better than a desk job - since not everyone will take this kind of position. The experience of working with different companies and sorting out their problems will make you a valuable asset should you want to settle into a permanent position.

My senior management travel every bit as much as a consultant. They have the travel and they deal with clients (big ones). So its a good experience if thats what you aspire to.

I have travelled a lot. For a time I was a project manager with North American wide responsibilities and my boss was in another country. I left that job because when I had young kids, I wanted to stick closer to home. I still enjoy going to new places, but some routine travel is a drag.

Two sides to every story

I've done it, self employed and under contract as a consultant. Travel is fun at first, but living in airports is not, I got to know the bartenders very well at many a US and Canadian airport. Being single, it was a gas to be all over, now I am pretty rooted to a coupleof provinces, much more enjoyable than flying to the same few dozen stops all the time.

As for future, it's like any skill. If you know how to market and sell yourself, not relying on emailing recruiters as a means ot find emploment, you'll do fine, no matter what you do. A 'digger' always works, people who gain certs or skills and just send out resumes do not.

As far as consulting as a career path, there are also two sides. I've seen many sales organisations who laugh at consultants, "they are just unemployed salesmen". Then there are others who see it as an ability to understand many available technologies, unless you are simply pitching from one or two solutions all the time.

A good consultant will have many products and a thorough knowledge of his market and ocmpetitors. Don't be lead to believe tat recommending one company's products is a condsulting job, they usually come with low salaries nand great 'proposed' comission.

Just have your radar out and read contracts carefully. if they are stating salary expectations, ask to see the sales numbers for ALL reps, not just the top performers, then you get an idea of where they stand. Check turnovers, are they going through mas staff or do they hire anybody?

These jobs are 50/50 at best there are so many scams and there are a few legit employers. Remember, if there's no money to be made, they sure as heck aren't going to be up front, get the numbers.
