How long does it take to uninstall service pack three of XP?

I'm uninstalling service pack 3 of Windows XP so I can uninstall Internet Explorer 8 (I believe it's corrupted). My computer is uninstalling Service pack 3, but it's been on the last step for possibly an hour now. Normally, how long does this take? Should I do a hard shut down?

As long as it takes

to do a wipe-and-reinstall from the recovery disk.

I believe there are several components in SP3 that say once they are installed, they cannot be uninstalled. Ditto IE8.

To get back to your pre-SP3/pre-IE8 system, your best bet would be to recover it back to an SP2 image.

OTOH, there are many important security updates in SP3, so removing it may not be a good idea.

I know its too late for this question but why are you uninstalling servic pack 3 just to unistall IE8. I uninstall IE8 all the time without removing SP 3.

No, I went to the add/remove programs, highlighted IE8, but there wasn't a remove button.
