How long should I let my switch, router ect. run for?

By Carnage007 ·
Its getting warmer outside and the AC in the office...not so good. How long should I let my Cisco switch run? Should I let it cool down over the weekends? Also, if it gets too hot, can it effect the network?

Under normal circumstances

These things are designed to run 100% of the time.

Should I let it cool down over the weekends?

While technically not necessary if there is no one in the office over that time turning it off will allow it to cool down by not having any power run through it and it will lower your Electricity Bill ever so slightly.

Though to be perfectly honest all Electrical Devices should be turned off when they are not supervised as they do have a risk of fire.

Also, if it gets too hot, can it effect the network?

Not normally but then again I suppose it all depends on what Too Hot actually is. Under normal circumstances it shouldn't hurt but then again as I have said previously any unsupervised Electrical Device should be turned off as Power Surges can come down the mains and start a fire. This is not confined to Stitches/Hubs though I've seen Ceiling Fans start a house fire when something nasty happened outside. I've also seen the tops of Ceramic Cook Tops embedded in the ceiling and walls when a tree fell onto the Overhead Power Lines and brought the High Tension Transmission Lines into contact with the Low Voltage Mains.
