How many Netware Sites are there ?

It's not possible to answer that question. There are thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of Web sites that, in some way, have some information about Netware.

You're right, Netware has managed to stay in existence in spite of Microsoft's dominance. In fact, Novell released Netware version 6.0 just last year. It wouldn't have been financially feasible for them to do that if there were no buyers for the product. There obviously are. A better indication of the number of Netware users might be found in the number of users groups. Do a search of Novell users groups or Netware users groups, and again, you'll see the hits number in the tens of thousands. There are a lot of Netware users out there.

However, Novell, as a company, is losing money. They lost over 300 million dollars in 2001 alone. Their revenue has dropped 400% while the industry average increased 7%. They are projected to return to profitability in 2002, but just barely. (But that is just a projection.) In 5 years their stock price has dropped 50%, while Microsoft's stock price has risen 400% over the same period. In the last year, Novel's stock price has lost a whopping 90%, while Microsoft (along with the rest of the "technology" market) has lost only about 30%. Moreover, Microsoft's fall in stock price is related to issues other than profitability. They earned an impressive 6.5 BILLION dollars in 2001 alone - about $1.15 for each share of Microsoft stock outstanding. And that's projected to increase about50% in 2002 and 75% by the end of 2003.

Would I, today, build my network infrastructure around Netware? No. If I did 10 years ago, would I change? I would certainly consider it. My guess is that Novell will be gobbled up by some other company in the future. Maybe Microsoft, maybe someone else.

I realize that this is a lot more information than you asked for, but what the heck. It was fun writing it.

Good luck and have

Hi,

By sites, I presume numbers of people/companies using netware?

Novell might be able to tell you but you'll only get an indication of the numbers from web sites and news groups.

Of course Novell's answer will be the rosey picture so not much help. Maxwell Edison's answer was a good one re: Income and projections - the implication is that its not a strong company and hence not a good choice... at least not in 2002.

I CAN tell you that there are still major sites out there with netware. PricewaterhouseCoopers is one of them, for instance... but they're contemplating moving away from it.

I wouldn't be contemplating using it...

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Tim.

The most trustful source for me is Netcraft (http://www.netcraft.com/survey/).
As you will see, netware does not appear, is just "another" webserver, leaving apache, iis, iplanet as the real leaders. Of course, there is still people using Lotus Domino, Netware and others, but in numbers, they are not relevant anymore.

It seems as if most of these answer's miss the real point. It doesn't sound as if you are asking how many websites mention or run Novell, but how many companies are still using Netware as their NOS. I don't have any specific numbers, though you could try asking someone at www.nwconnection.com or www.novell.com/coolsolutions/ BUT I did just want to comment on the previous answers. It seems as though these posters have fallen into the same mindset as management. I wonder if any of these posters actually WORK with Netware and Microsoft on a regular basis, or are they just following the lemmings and slamming Novell because that's the popular thing? Well, I DO work with both Novell and Microsoft, am MCSE and Master CNE certified, and I still wince when I hear that one of our customers wants to switch from Novell to MS, because I know they are going to be disappointed with the performance of their new server that has more than twice the horsepower, and that they will now become at least a bi-monthly visit for service (actually, I guess that should make me happy, and I wonder if that is why many companies like mine PUSH Microsoft, because there is a LOT more revenue in supporting it after the install). I never see the customers that I installed Netware at 2 years ago because their servers (to quote from "Terminator") "will not stop". Anyway, Yes I agree that Novell as a company is shaky right now, but I know that many BIG companies (P&G, United Airlines) run Netware, and probably about 30%-40% of our small business customers run Netware. Would I install Netware right now if I started my own company? Well, I'm rather fond of the idea of not having to reboot/patch/update my server on a weekly basis, so I wouldn't give it a second thought, I would go buy Netware 6 Suite.

One last interesting tidbit that I just found yesterday, check out the demo (or at least just read through the scenario) at http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/netware/features/a_demo_w2k_nw6.html
Remember to remove any spaces in the URL.
I admit the scenario is only two little points that are extremely one-sided, but I have been in the 2nd situation (assigning file rights)on Microsoft servers on a number of occasions and had to sit around for 15 minutes or so, and knowing that this only takes a fraction of a second in Netware, I just thought - sorry, can't really say that here, but man that was a ridiculous waste of time.
