How many SQL users will server support?

By caser85 ·
I'm purchasing a server for an application we will be hosting on Windows 2000 server. It runs on SQL and IIS. THe application is an online purchasing system that will host at least 200 users to start. My question is, how big does my server have to be? Where are the specs for how many users a server will support?

Here is the current config. I'm looking at:

Rack-mount Gateway
Dual PIII at 850Mhz
1GB of memory
4 9GB hard drives with RAID 1

How much traffic would this support? I appreciate any and all comments!!

My guess would be that if you have your database setup right, this config should be overkill for what you need.

SQL Specs: there is a minimum overhead for each user of 40kb.

There will be an overhead for IIS connectivity (and Win2000 background processing) as well.

However, though your current config seems 'ok' I would recommend that your online purchasing system supplier verify the specs for the hardare/os platform. It should be part of their predicatable performance benchmarks.
