How much is my laptop worth?

    Locked

    by nick.aaland ·

I am thinking about selling my computer so I can upgrade, and was wondering if any of you could give me a hand in appraising it. I was thinking somewhere around 500 dollars. Thanks! -Avery

    Age/Use:
Used for home and some gaming, had it for about two years now. Just has the usual scratches on the gloss from using a laptop.

    Model:
    HP Pavilion DV 2000

    OS:
    Windows XP Home (w/ SP2)

    Processor:
    Intel T2250 Dual-Core @ 1.73GHz

    RAM:
    1022mb

Page File: (Not sure what this is or how important it is)
    1917 available

    Video Card:
    nVidia Geforce 7200 Go w/ 128mb

    Screen Size:
    15.1 in.

    Sound Card:
    Conexant HD Audio Output

    Wireless Card:
Not sure, but nothing fantastic, just something generic from 2 years ago that works fine

    HD:
100gb, not entirely sure of the RPM, but it’s partitioned, C drive has 82 gigs free, the rest is the install disk you can use to reinstall during startup

    Other:
It has a built in webcam @ 1.3megapixels, built-in microphone.
Also, the warranty has about 1.5 years left on it, it’s HP’s best coverage possible.

Well the honest answer is only as much as the buyer is willing to pay.

So list it on E-Bay and see what is offered. Depending on your location and where you are prepared to send it in the world will be the finial answer to your question.

Much less than what you think….

It’s a buyer’s market. Used laptops are a dime a dozen. When someone can purchase a brand new HP starting at $549, why would they purchase a 2 year-old machine with less horse power on the video card, less space on the hard drive, a shorter warranty and more wear and tear than a new one? In other words, why purchase someone else’s headaches when you can buy new ones for yourself? 😉

Of course, maybe someone only has $500 to spend and not $549. So, you may get lucky on eBay. But, be prepared to take much less than what YOU think it’s worth.

And, don’t forget to send everything that came with the laptop, including all media, to the next owner. Everything was sold at a special OEM price along with that laptop. You can’t keep any of it to use on the next one.

About 14 months ago I purchased an HP DV9225 for $1759. It has an AMD tl-60 (2 GHZ) cpu, 2 gigs pc5300 Ram, Dual 160 gig HD’s with Vista Ultimate X64 preconfigured (and upgraded to XP Pro), Nvidia GE Force 7600gs discrete Graphics (256 meg RAM), 17 inch wide screen display at 1440 X 900, 4 USB ports, 1 firewire, HDMI ouput, VGA output, SDIN video output, 1.3 Mpixel web cam, stereo mics, High definition audio, SPIF output, Broadcom wireless, 10/100/1000 nic, dual layer DVD writer with Lightscribe, remote control, and a five in one card reader. The NB still has the protective mylar on the lid.

Today I can buy a roughly equivalent unit new for $850; the only difference is a lessor video card, an Nvidia GE Force 8400m (256 meg RAM).

That is better than a 50 percent loss. A savvy buyer would walk away from $500.

I have a customer that sells refurbished Gateways and Dells with factory warranty in the box that sell new for $900. Customers walk away when he sells for $600.

Instead of trying to sell in order to upgrade, why not …

Take what will be a measly sum by comparison, and stick another gigabyte of RAM into this DV2000.

Depending on how it is presently configured, you will either have one free slot in addition to 1 x 1024MB, or have both slots occupied by 2 x 512MB.

If one slot is free – you want another identical stick to the one that is currently in there.

If both slots are occupied, you’ll want to throw the 2 x 512MB sticks out (or better still – sell them on!) and buy 2 x 1024MB giving your existing XP system a new lease of life with 2 gigabytes of speed.

Go to this site on the laptop and get a scan of your existing RAM configuration:
      http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CLLW5aLT-ZQCFQpPQgod9TaPqw

It will return a result of what is currently fitted and what type of RAM you should fit as an upgrade.

You are then free to shop around for the best prices, armed with the EXACT specification number for what you’re looking for.

Maximum outcome for minimum outlay! 🙂
