How Much RAM to use with 95 or 98?

By Angry CPU ·
Hello all, I was curious about some good hard evidence that Windows 95/98 would not run to well if adding more the 64 Megs of RAM, is this true, would it depend on the mother-board and system configuration/tweaking?
Thanks..

John

How Much RAM to use with 95 or 98?

by O/Siris In reply to How Much RAM to use with ...

Windows 9x itself has no problems whatsoever with large amounts of memory beyond 64MB. I'm running one machine with 256MB of RAM, and Windows98 runs without a problem or hiccup (relatively speaking).

I believe it was the Intel 440LX or TX chipsets that provided a cache for accessing memory on the motherboard. If that cache wasn't big enough for the memory you had installed, it actually slowed down the machine. And I think 64MB was the magic number. My computer is at home, but I think it (an Asus P2B motherboard) uses the 440TX chipset, so that would mean it was not the TX that had the problems. If you're running a Pentium II/Celeron, or a PIII, I doubt this will be a problem.

Hope that helps.

Windows 95 and 98 will run okay with over 64megs of memory,it was reported by Microsoft that running Win98 with over 128,would cause a problem running applications, yet with tweaking the page file there is no evidence that it has problems as long as you have updated drivers.
