    How often should you Defrag

Just wanted to get some feed back on how often you guys set your degfrag schedule to defrag for your workstations? (daily, weekly, monthly, or manually when needed)

Thanks in advance for your reply,
    Sean

I’m obsessive, so I do it weekly.

I generally defrag shortly after I backup my data. If I don’t have time to do a backup, then I don’t have time to rebuild the machine if defrag screws up the file system. Not that that happens very often, but it can.

(sorry, forgot to put a timetable on before accidently submitting!)

For users who need things backed up regularly, they get defragged about once every month or three. For most users, they may get defragged once a year, they may not. Generally they don’t have enough turn around on their files for it to ever become much of an issue, and defragging is more of a troubleshooting issue than anything else.

For workstations, you really don’t need to de-frag more than once a month.

I de-frag after installing software and major updates.

Beyond that, the frequency depends on how large and how many user files are stored on the PC.

For a box that runs basically only as a router, you shouldn’t ever need to.

For a file server, it might make sense to do this monthly, depending on volume of adds and deletes.

      On an Exchange machine, never.

On your personal home PC, whenever you feel like taking the time to do it, really… You’ll have to remember to check the logs afterward, to see if it actually finished or not…

For our company workstations, we never defrag them. The user can, if he really wants to, but it’s not something we plan for. For the most part, the only files there are temporary, and most of the work they do goes to the servers. In theory, it all should, but we have DR plans to allow local access…

Besides, they get rebuilt every once in a while, and that pretty much negates the need for a defrag.

So I guess my answer is that it depends on the user.
