How secure is Windows Bluetooth pairing request?
by Oblivion99 · about 4 months, 3 weeks ago
Dear all
I use Windows 11.
When a Bluetooth device wants to pair with to my laptop, a message pops up on my screen asking if I want to allow the pairing.
1.
How secure is this?2.
Could a hacker bypass this, and still get access to my data without my knowledge through Bluetooth?Thank you
Best regards

Bluetooth is short-range, so it’s unsecure if you giver permission without looking around to see who asks it with what device for what purpose. But I suppose you don’t do that.
If the hacker has access to your laptop, in principle (and depending on the details of the hack) he might be able to give that permission without you noticing it. For added security, turn off bluetooth. For more security, disable the device in Device Manager. For maximum security, remove the bluetooth hardware.

Hacker not access laptop
by Oblivion99 · about 4 months, 3 weeks ago
In reply to Re: Bluetooth
Lets say the hacker can’t access my laptop physical / in person.
Could a hacker then bypass / get through the Bluetooth pairing request? Or are we talking NSA level skills required?-

He can’t do it from the bluetooth device. But if he had hacked your laptop, who knows what he could do? That’s what i meant with “having access”.

“He can’t do it from the bluetooth device”
The hackers or mine?—————————————————-
In my scenario, the laptop has not been hacked. The hacker can’t hack my laptop through my Bluetooth device?
It this only because of the Bluetooth pairing request?
Or what else makes it not possible?Thank you

Dear kees_b
If the Bluetooth is the newest version, is the newest hardware version, has the newest driver, and the newest firmware.
Would you then consider it almost completely secure?Thank you

In reply to How secure is Windows Bluetooth pairing request?
The Bluetooth pairing request feature in Windows is designed with security in mind, requiring user consent to connect devices. This process includes authentication through a pairing code or prompts, providing an additional layer of security against unauthorized access. While the feature is generally robust, vulnerabilities may exist. Advanced attackers may be able to exploit this or use other methods to circumvent the pairing requirement. To minimize risk, ensure that your Bluetooth drivers and system software are up to date, and turn off Bluetooth when not in use. Keep control of your Bluetooth environment by regularly checking connected devices.

“Advanced attackers”
Is that like a super hacker?
Or more like NSA-level? -
