How should I go about backing up my computer with minimal storage?

My computer has a very low storage that is currently taken up by many large games. How can I go about backing up my files? Should I back up everything or only certain files? Would an external SSD work well?

Backup everything you don’t want to lose and can’t replace. Any storage with enough space you have access to is fine. Alas, burning it to a few rewriteable DVD’s as was common 20 years ago doesn’t seem a good idea as each disc can contain at most some 5 GB.

Please note that backing up doesn’t change the available space. Only deleting saves space, if you delete them from the Recycle Bin also (or delete from the command prompt or with shift-del).

One wonders why people buy a PC with a too small HDD/SSD or don’t replace the too small HDD/SSD by a bigger one or add a second or third HDD/SSD to store all they want.

At the time of getting this computer, I wasn’t too technologically advanced. I heard the storage wouldn’t be enough for gaming but chose to ignore it. Would an external SSD be fine? Or maybe just installing a second?

Now you’re more technologically advanced, you surely know the difference between storing (a file) or running (a program).

External disks are not really suitable for running, but good for storing. For example, storing a backup copy of files on your internal disk or disks. And that was what you were asking for.
Of course, it’s not forbidden to store such a backup copy on a second disk inside your PC, but that doesn’t protect you against ransomware. That would encrypt both the original and the copy then.

If you need more storage for programs and data, you need a bigger internal disk or a second internal disk. It’s up to you which of the two.

There are several backup options, many of which are very economical. The most flexible from my experience is either an external SSD via USB or via cloud storage via Wi-Fi/internet, both available
readily on desktop or laptop. Do yourself a favor and don’t get cheap or buy the smallest amount of storage possible.
