How Should I Respond to Emails from a Known Hacker?

By bocaboy ·
I determined through investigation that someone who is sending me friendly emails pretending she wants to help me with my sites misused my cpanel and wordpress passwords I gave to her to set up a site. The person is in a third world country. Should I not respond to her emails or pretend I don't know she is a hacker and just respond that I am not interested in her offers of further assistance with my sites. I have reason to believe this person is very technologically sophisticated. Last thing I want to do is **** her off.

Hackers, or those who think they are hackers, have no magical powers to do evil.

However if you have given this individual a lot of information about yourself, and they are under the impression that you are a very trusting person, then it may be possible for them to take advantage of you, as she already has already demonstrated. Therefore simply ignore all contact.

What sort of misuse of your hosting service did she do? (just curious)

"I have reason to believe this person is very technologically sophisticated."

What makes you believe that? You mention "passwords I gave to her" - that's Social Engineering, not technological competence.

The "Con" in "Con Artist" is "Confidence." A con artist gets you to believe something about them, then uses that against you. So why do you believe this person "in a third world country" is "very technologically sophisticated"? You're probably being "conned."

Change all of your passwords, get a new email address and change the contact email for all of your accounts. Change all of your security questions for password reset. Change your online handle. Do it right away, today.

Well as she didn't actually Crack anything

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to How Should I Respond to E ...

I can not see how you get away with accusing her of being a Hacker/Cracker.

You gave her the Means to access these accounts and she in your opinion misused this information some how.

How would you deal with a Business who didn't do as they promised? Would you continue to deal with them hoping that they change their ways or find someone else to take your business to?

Here I think you are looking for an excuse to continue this process whatever it is instead or doing what comes to mind.

For that reason I imagine that there is something else on your agenda.

The easy answer is Change the Access Codes and get on with your life. You're not going to get into her Knickers so stop dreaming.

Add her to your "blacklist" and if she asks why you haven't responded, you can answer truthfully "Oh, I didn't receive that email. I'll have to check into that."

As the old saying goes... "With friends like that, who needs enemies?"

Be grateful that's all that happened. Now, go clean up your mess and don't do it again.
