HOW TO: add/remove/replace printers and related software…

    Hello there again.

I just bought the HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One, which is replacing the current printer installed: HP deskjet F380-all-in-one.

I was browsing help forums online and many people are experiencing an incredible variety of problems installing their all-in-one printers: printer driver conflicts, printer port issues, hp-solution-center and print-zone software problems, etc.

I wish to avoid all of these issues if possible.

    Here are my Q&A:
(what to do, in the correct order)

    1. Should I REMOVE the software for the old printer (F380) before installing the new printer software?
    (probably this one’s obvious)

    2. HOW should I do this; by disabling the printer in “Installed Printers” folder, going to the “Programs” folder and deleting it; or using the “Add/Remove Programs” fuction to remove the printer?

    Additional to this question:
2a. There are at last 7 related/unrelated HP programs in the “add/remove” section. Which hp products do I remove?

    3. Should I reboot the pc after
un-installing the old software (and before running the disk or connecting the new pc), or is this necessary?

    4. Do I run the new (4315) software disk BEFORE connecting the new printer, or in the reverse order?

I could appreciate a step-by-step guide to installing this printer & it’s related software correctly.

(It used to be so simple just a few short years ago.)

    Here is my system info:
    PC: HP Pavil.
    Pent. 4/w Intel
    XP Home ed. 2002 version
    w/serv pack 2 installed)

    All help appreciated
    Thanks-
    gc

PS: I made the mistake of chatting with “HP online techs” on the co.’s website for about an hour, where all they did was repeat my questions back to me, with the occasional text, “I can help in this regard, please”. Nothing useful was obtained. I’ve run into this before, and truth be told, their stockholders should all receive a letter detailing the level of service being offered by such a huge, recognizable name as HP.

      1. I would uninstall everything HP even if i had a HP computer. All the software I’ve used is garbage. The new printer will have the drivers and probably more crappy software (you must use)

      2. Use add remove programs and ignore the printers and faxes. A useless printer doesn’t mean anything.

2a. Me personally would remove them all

      3. I would reboot for the heck of it. No use be second smart and hour dumb.

      4. The last HP printer I installed it wanted me to install the software then it prompts you to plug it in. I did the opposite and when I was prompted I unplugged and replugged in. The other computers I didn’t plug it in until prompted.
(If you are installing the printer to be a network printer. Move the printer from computer to computer installing the software and printer then change the port to a print server port after the software is installed on every machine.

As far as the stock holders you are the one buying their products. Does it matter the crappy tech support if they already have your money. Take the printer back and buy one from another company. Call Okidata, Brother or compact tech support maybe one of theirs is better.

        Thanks for your kind responses.

As you can see in the post before yours, I resolved this issue by doing it myself w/no help.

“When all else fails, follow instructions!”

PS>> about those stockholders…you’re right: I bought the co’s merchandise-they have great products…but I do have the right to expect at least competent support.
It was some guru who first suggested in an on-line article that when you cannot get satisfactory-level support, try threatening to write the stockholders individually or as a group: this would supposedly prompt immediate action on your behalf as the co’s revenue is directly tied to not just customer dollars but co. shares as well, and if stockholders (an antsy group anyway) assume that there are issues on the horizon, the price-per-share just might fall a few points- or a lot. It was just a thought; I was blowing off steam-which I do a lot. Thanks anyway.
