How to automate machine wakeup daily.

By randerson7 ·
I need to wake up the XP professional machines that serve a print server. they must be on to allow others to print through them. I would like to shut them down at night and wake them up in the mornig at a specified time. Any suggestion on a workable solution?

You could set APM to go into Standby when you push the power button and then create a scheduled task to run at the time your want the machine to wake up and configure it to wake the machine to run the task.

The task could be as simple as opening word pad.

In Standby, the system state is saved to memory and uses only enough electricity to maintain the memory which is next to none.

To set the task to wake up the machine, after you create the task, right click select properties and then go to the settings tab. At the bottom is a check box for "Wake the computer to run this task.

If your server/workstation has a WakeOnLan enabled NIC you can use a script or freeware utility to send it a "wake up call". Look here for a free command line utility: http://www.matcode.com/wol.htm

Or look here for a COM object that you can use with a vbscript: http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-com.aspx
