By condescendent ·
We want to upgrade to Exchange 2003. Before upgrading, how could I backup all email accounts and emails on the server.

Thanks.

You can use NTBackup on Windows 2000/2003 to backup the Exchange Information Stores or use third party products such as EMC Retrospec, CA Arcserve or Veritas Backup Exec.

an alternative

by CG IT In reply to Backup

is to have users export their stuff to PST files.

after the migration, users then import the stuff.

I've never been a fan of backing up the information store on Exchange. All I've ever experienced from trying that and then restoring the information store from a backup is really bad headaches.

Take the exchange offline during non business hours, upgrade, stick it back online. then have users import their PST files.

inbound mail will be delayed when the Exchange server is offline but most have a 12 hour delay response before an NDR is generated.
