How to be alerted by smartphone connected to unintended network named same?

    by gavottetreat03 ·

How to be alerted by smartphone when connected to unintended network which is named same as intended network? Doesn’t device VPN help mitigate this situation? Reason is I recalled someone said WiFi network name can be misleading; example is someone else can provide a network with same network name. In this case your device may be connecting to someone else’s network if your network strength is compromised.

No, VPN doesn’t help here at all. It uses whatever network the phone is connected to.
And the phone connects to a network if (a) the network name and network password match and (b) your phone is set to connect automatically to that network name. When not connected to any WiFi and WiFi is enabled it’s continually looking around to find a such a network.

You are the protection here. Disable WiFi until needed,. Don’t use the “automatical connect” option, but always select it yourself from the list of networks that are shown. Only you know it’s safe!

        Great answer.
First precaution is to avoid connecting to random networks.
Second precaution is to forget all networks manually except your preferred.
Third precaution is to switch off auto-network connection.
You can take it more tekky by using a third party app like WiFi Prioritizer to select the network your phone will first connect to.

VPN won’t fix this one. And while a VPN is a good thing, it’s far from bulletproof. I won’t get into why that is today.

Besides the EVIL TWIN problem, you might be able to tell by which IP is used on the Internet side of the connection.

A decent code monkey should be able to write such a thing but how would you know if the Evil Twin is in play?

VPN will not help at all
