How to boot from HD

By vtpham ·
I needed to reinstall Window, so I boot up my old HP computer and hit the DEL key to change the boot menu to boot from CD (and foolishly remove the boot from hard drive). Now that Windows is installed, I can't change the Bios configuration because every time the computer boot up it asks me to hit any key to boot from CD so I can't change the Bios menu anymore by hitting the DEL key. Any idea how I can switch the boot from CD to HD ?

Don't wait so long

by TheChas In reply to How to boot from HD

By the time you see the prompt to boot from CD, you have waited too long to enter BIOS setup.

When the computer makes the first beep sound after you start up is when you need to hit the Del key to enter BIOS setup.

Once you do get into BIOS setup, if you want a longer time to hit the Del key, change the POST / Memory test settings to long or disable quick test.

I tried that. I hit the DEL continuously right after turning on the computer. It still doesn't get in to Bios Configuration page - looks like the "Hit any key to boot from CD" message took precedence. Holding the DEL key down didn't help either.
Without the Windows install CD in the CD drive, it says "No operating system found" or something like that.

I was hoping for some thing that you can do after Windows has been booted up (via CD) to change the Bios setting - other than that, I suspect the only solution is to junk this computer.

Reset CMOS

Don't give up yet.

So systems have a quiet boot option where you cannot get into BIOS settings if this is set.

What you can do, is reset the CMOS. Either set the clear CMOS jumper and power up the PC, or remove the CMOS battery and disconnect the power cord for about 1/2 hour.

The system should default back to the HDD for boot.

Del or F1

by willcomp In reply to How to boot from HD

Are you sure that Del key was used for BIOS setup? Most HP PCs use F1.

I used the DEL key to change the boot to CD and remove the boot from HD (that's what got me in trouble). Surprisingly, when I tried F1 (as you and others have suggested), it did take me to the BIOS setup. I don't have to open up the case after all.

Thanks to you all for your helpful suggestions.
