How to circumvent over the cloud services max file size/folder sizes limit?

I am using a free site that obviously sets limits to file sizes and total number of files and/or total GB per upload.

Is there any way I could work around those limits other than breaking files into smaller sizes?

I know about FileZilla laden with FTP capabilities. But FTP was deemed “old” in 2010.

Any better solutions created in these last 4 years? If so tutorial links on how to use it effectively
