How to configure multiple BDC?

By Gel ·
Is it possible to configure multiple BDC (Backup Domain Controller) using only one PDC(Primary Domain Controller)?

Please post message if you know how?

How to configure multiple BDC?

I need a bit more information here, as I am not undertanding the issue here.

Once you have a PDC in a domain, adding new BDCs is a simple as installing NT as a BDC and joining the domain. You may need to adjust a bit after this, but attaching itto the domain is as easy as adding any other computer.

In Windows 2000, it is even easier, as even more of the questions are "answered" for you by the setup.

With BDCs, you should add them one at a time to be certain you have given time to sync up accounts, etc. prior to adding another load to the network, but this is fairly normal procedure with adding servers to a network anyway.

According to Microsoft, one BDC for every 2000 users is about normal, so gauge your needs before adding too many.

If you can explain the problem a bit more, I should be able to add more information to this answer.

the simple answer is yes.
Also, the way nt domains work, only 1 PDC can be on a domain at a time. You can put BDC's at will, but the question still remains how many BDC's to you really need, that depends on # of users and where these users are located in the network related to the PDC.

In NT, a PDC or BDC can only be set up during the NT install procedure. If you already have NT servers that are set up as server only, you would have to re-install NT.
During the NT install, at a certain point, it will ask you what kind of server you want to install, PDC, BDC, or server. Pick BDC, but then be ready to put in the NT Domain of the PDC and a administrator account/password so that it can go out into the network and verify that you have the right permissions to actually make a BDC and be added to the Domain, which means you need to be connected to the network and be able to "see" the PDC on the network.

Yes, you can have any number of BDCs but only one PDC per domain. But shouldn't this be in the NT forum?
