how to create an intranet w/ office 2000

    Hi,

Our 20 user NT network is running office 97 right now (with Outlook 2000), and i’d prefer not to switch to Office 2000 for various reasons. My questions are:

    1. what tools are available to quickly, easily, and ??inexpensively create anIntranet for the office?
    2. perhaps i could install Office 2000 on 1 or 2 machines, and use Office 2000 to generate the intranet? i understand it was built to make this easy?
    3. there was some kind of Office 97 intranet kit–does anyone know anything about that?
    4. maybe there are some fairly inexpensive 3rd party intranet tools available?

    thanks!

      Hi,

Office 2000 has web-publishing capabilities, but it is nevertheless no web-publishing program. You can create html pages, but you can not administrate and build an intranet. An easy to use tool is Microsoft Frontpage, which is only included in the Office 2000 Premium Package.

One thing about Frontpage: it is no good choice if you use it in combination with other web publishing tools.

You can use an Adobe product like Page Mill, which is a good choice as well. You might even consider to experiment with some of the Shareware Webpublishers, which are rated as a very good choice by PC Magazin an c’t for years.

The Office 97 addons from Microsoft are only export filters, which let you create a html page from within the Office programs.

If you don’t have a web server operating yet, then there isn’t an easy and cheap way to do it.

I suggest that the easiest, cheapest alternative for a small office is to use one of the web based intranet systems from http://www.intranets.com or http://www.homepage.com. They provide free space for small intranets. This gives you a chance to try them out.

      Hi Fred
      1. use what you have
NT comes with a webserver, install it. You need the TCP/IP protocol installed.
      2. You can use Office to create your web documents,
      3. You can create web documents in Office 97
      4. If you want to spend money Homesite is a nice, easy to use editor.
The real issue with creating an intranet is the content you plan on posting and the physical orginization of the data.
What you might look for is primer on creating a web site. You have enough of the basic tools to get the job done.
