How to disable NT Printer Notifications

By jlochey ·
How can I disable the printer notifications that popup on a users desktop? I've tried shutting them off with registry hacks at the users machine and I've tried shutting them off at the print server all to no avail.

There are a couple of things that you can try. First you must have access to the machine that the print server is hosted. With Server Manager you double click the machine that hosts the print server. From the server properties window click on the Alerts button, then remove the machine or username that is receiving the alerts from the list, by highlighting it then clicking on the Remove button.

Second solution: On the machine that hosts the print server, you could open the services manager and stop the Alerter service and make sure it is set to manual so that it does not restart the next time the machine is rebooted.

I think the first solution is the one to use if at all possible.

on the Server that is sharing the print devices, go to the printers folder, then choose the first menu "file", select "server properties", go to "advanced" and de-select the tick box for printer notifications.

With NT 4.0, you can modify these entries on the "Print Server" by using
Start / Settings / Printers / File / Server Properties / Advanced.

To do this via the Registry:

To prevent PopUp messages from appearing upon print job completion:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers
To prevent PopUp notification: add a value name of NetPopup, set REG_DWORD to 0. To prevent logging: Add VALUE: EventLog set Reg_DWORD to 0.

You will have to stop and restart the spooler from services in the Control Panel but you may wish to reboot.

If incase you are using Netware I mean to say If you are using CSNW or GSNW, use Control Panel / ... Services for Netware and clear the Notify when Printed check box (in Print Options). Clear the Print Banner check box to prevent banner pages from being printed.

Click OK to save your settings.

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Jasjeet Singh

If you don't use the messenger for anything else, your can access the services applet in the control panel, double-click on messenger service, select manual, OK, then stop the service.
