I have the undaunting task of deciding what to do about Comp Time at our software development company. We want to treat our employees fairly and struggle with how to distribute Comp time without giving away all the profits. (We have quarterly profit sharing and this is where all employees can get cash incentives). As expected in our field, when deadlines are pressed, we work long days and some long weekends. Where do we draw the line on what is a usual amount of expected hours and when do we need to really give comp time??? We’ve been letting people leave early or take a paid day off here or there but struggle with how much is enough. Some of our people worked tremendous hours in September last year on a huge project, we gave them a party with family as a thank you and gave managers flexibility to okay paid time off as needed by each employee. Some asked for more time than others. However, most still don’t think that was enough and has been a sore point we need to address. What would be fair, do we look at # of hours in and come up with some formula to give more days off? If so what is appropriate, 2hrs in to get 1 hr off? We asked them but they are waiting on management to decide what we are willing to give. We are a small company and can’t afford to give away billable project time but need to strike a balance to keep are people happy. We have also revised some of our planning so we don’t have to work as much overtime, but reality is we will most likely continue to have last minute deadlines that must be met. Any ideas on how to make sure we are being fair, please respond. thanks
