How To Effectively Format A Fake Flash Drive ??

By Speedy1994 ·
Can Anyone Help Me....Well I've gt A Weird Unique kind of Kingston 16gb pen drive/flash drive or what u may call that.... When I Bought It And run it for the first time;it showed 15.6 Gb Space free as expected....Suddenly Don't Know What Struck My mind but i decided to format it (wish i could undo tht format just One time) And Got the result after some time tht "Windows Was Unable Complete The Format" And The Pen Drive Got Corrupted now displaying just 0mb as free disk...(Type Of Dead).....

After Some Searching; I got the idea to VERIFY THE FLASH DRIVE FROM KINGSTON'S WEBSITE...SO CHECKED AND GOT THE RESULT...."The flash memory product you inquired about is not an authentic Kingston product. We suggest that you double check the information on the product label."

So Now I Started Considering My Pen Drive As Fake And Looking For Solutions....Reached SOSFakeflash;"http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/2008/10/25/repairing-counterfeit-flash-drives/comment-page-2/#comments"....Then I Tried Used "h2testw_1.4";"AlcorTools numerable versions.." ; "Iformat 2" And What not....Many more such programs..But None Of These Programs Recognized my Flash Frive.....Nothing Seemed to Work.....

Finally Got The Idea to check my VID And PID and other details through the software called "Chipgenius/Usbdeview" And Then With This Info. Try TO Search The Right Software For Re-Flashing My Flash Drive (See How Knowledge increases but still no use;lol).....Here's The Result I Got......Searching since 3 days; got nothing...So Tomshardware For Help....

Can Anyone Give Suggestions ??

Here Are Some Screenshots Of My Research On My Flash Drive.....

Well the links that you posted show nothing useful

Just a message that the pictures have been removed or relocated so I can not do much from there.

What's on the Outside of the Case of the Thumb Drive?

Where did you get it?

Can you return it to the place you bought it?

Not sure about Kingston but some of the bigger USB Thumb Drives have software that Compresses the Actual Data stored on them to get the bigger sizes. They tend to be 8 GIG Drives and with Compression give 16 GIG of Storage Space.

With these there is Special Software used but if it's a Counterfeit Kingston I'm not sure what can be done here.

You may be SOL

If you got this drive from China. I recently read an article about certain vendors selling strange items in different packages to increase profits. Can you return this device for a refund?

P.S. You should be able to format it from Windows(or any OS) without special tools.

It says "the parameter is incorrect". This would be a problem with the command. Did you check the event log?

It may be that this device will not format as FAT32. Did you try NTFS or what's it called...exFAT?

Try Linux or OS X

by dcolbert Contributor In reply to How To Effectively Format ...

Most likely Linux will be what you can easily get access to, I'd suggest maybe a Sun Virtual Box Ubuntu VM.

Mount the drive under Linux and use the Linux partitioning tools of your choice to see if you can format the entire drive in a non-MS format... ext2 or ext3, and then try formating back to Fat 32 or NTFS once that is complete.

But with a knock-off eBay product, the best you can probably hope for is a little bit of time before it fails again.
