How to ensure Exch07 is stable? AD questions in particular…

    by buschman_007 ·

I’ve built an Exch07 std server on Windows 2003 R2 x64. Using a Dell PE2950 as the hardware. I ran the best practices analyzer and fixed all issues, some of which were AD issues. Yesterday I found that a Domain Controller in a remote location was not properly synced. It had been out for so long I could not sync nor could I do a simple demote/promote. I had to forcibly demote and then promote it. All seemed well at it’s completion. But unbeknownst to me at the time it had caused problems with my Exchange 07 server. Mail would come in but not go out. I checked EV errors this morning and saw a bunch referring to typology failing and “The Exchange Topology service on server localhost did not return a suitable domain controller.” So I tried a simple reboot thinking it was a complication from yesterday’s AD work. The server booted up to “Applying computer settings…” and stayed there for over an hour before getting to a login screen. I login and get the same “Applying computer settings…” for another 15-20 minutes before the system came back up.

Once it did IS, IMAP4, and service host services were not and would not start. Tons of ADaccess EV errors. Since this is a partial production box I put a call into MS to get some speedy help. What eventually fixed it was running /preparead off the Exch07 disk.

So now everything seems fine. However this isn’t the first problem I’ve had with this server. I was wondering if any of the exchange gurus here could share some incite on either where I may have gone wrong in the setup of this server or perhaps some tests I could run to verify that all the issues are now fixed? Is 2003 the OS for me to be running? Would I be better served installing 08 and starting over from scratch? Should all my DCs be on 08? I’m curious why this AD work effected my 07 server and not my older 03 server?

Any help, suggestions, or incite would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Mike B.
