How to find another computers IP addres?

By viper2k29 ·
I have linked my computer to my friends using the following set-up:-
We both have 10mbits TCP/IP Ethernet network cards, and we are directly linked together.
Is there a way of finding the IP address of the other computer so that we can comunicate or is there a program which allows us to do this anyway.
Microsoft Netmeeting requires both computers to be running it and that we know each-others IP address but this isn't possible without having to physically walk around the house. Is there a chat program we could use.
Many thanks

If you know the computer's name, you can use the ping, or tracert utility to get the PC's IP address, but only if it is a server that would be on a DNS server. However, it sounds like maybe you both dial-up to the Internet, and then get into Netmeeting, right?

The best bet, get your friend on the phone (hopefully you have a separate line for voice & PC), have him run WINIPCFG on his PC, and then he can tell you what his IP address is.

Good luck.

If you are dialing up and connecting to the internet and wish to talk to your friend, as well as millions of other users around the world then you best bet is to use ICQ try looking at www.ICQ.com.

Since you are both in the same house and connected directly together, you can ping the computer name from the command line. This will return the IP address of the other computer. Here is what you do-
Open the DOS (Command) prompt
type: ping <computername>
You should see something that reads like this:
C:\ping tigger

Pinging tigger [169.254.6.59] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 169.254.6.59: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=63
Reply from 169.254.6.59: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=63
Reply from 169.254.6.59: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=63
Reply from 169.254.6.59: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=63

Ping statistics for 169.254.6.59:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 10ms, Average = 2ms

When making the netmeeting call use that ip address that you get back

Each of you needs to run ipconfig. Run MSDOS prompt and type ipconfig. It will give you your IP address.
