How to fix XP run command?

By Barry.Blackburn ·
5 pc on a network, two have the following problem.

when windows run command \\computer name\drive letter is entered, instead of opening the drive, windows opens "open with" dialogue box.

"open with" dialogue box also is opened if properties > find target is selected.

not a huge problem but is a real pain when trying to connect to another pc not on the network.

any suggestions?

I'm hoping someone with more Windows networking experience replies.

Unfortunately, I'm not much for mapped drives.

This is strictly a drive letter? And local drives and directories operate normally? My only guess then is that these were not properly networked, but this assumes that this setup never worked. Was this behaving normally previously?

The problem is only encountered when the windows "Run" command is used to connect to another computer. Problem is recent and is present on a desktop (one of 3 networked) and a laptop. The problem PC's will connect without errors using the address bar of the explorer, or from the various methods the file managers use to read mapped drives. The problem for the most part is minor, the pain is using the laptop to connect to "non mapped" drives. In the past I always used the "Run Command" (\\computer name\drive letter), to connect to non mapped drives. Using this method now brings up the "open with" dialogue box instead of connecting to the specified drive.

why don't you just tell it to use windows explorer (explore.exe) and check the always use this box? Would be the easiest fix.
