HOW TO FIXING EXTERNAL HD?

By jman24x ·
Good Day everyone,

I just want to ask if there anything i can do for external hard drive (Western Digital Element) 320 GB. What happened is the other day I was trying to re-format it using the software that will make it capable of installing WINDOW 7 from it. but unfortunately a power failure while it is formatting. Now when I plug the external hard drive, Windows can detect a new hardware but it cannot found a driver for it.

Thanks in advance

I CANT DO THAT

by jman24x In reply to HOW TO FIXING EXTERNAL HD ...

thanks for the reply, but it only up to "add hardware" that the external hard disk cant be detected, and the OS ( I've tried xp and window 7) cant find any driver. but before i just plugged it automatically get the driver it needed. And i cant see the external HD in both window explorer and disk management.

Have you tried getting the driver for it? It may have had it's own driver on the drive before, but now that the MBR is likely cooked, you may have to feed it the driver manually.

WD has a Utility to format this drive on their Web Site here

Called External USB/Firewire FAT 32 Formatting Utility have you tried using that?

Rescue idea

One thing that _will_ work is to boot your machine from a live-CD Linux distribution (I like PCLinuxOS <www.pclinuxos.com/&gt and use
it to do a clean new re-format of that hard disk.

(That's a recipe for lots of other problems, too: modern Linux distributions have lots more drivers already at hand than Windows does...)

Well then WD has a Format Utility available here

You need to click on the link called External USB/FireWire Fat32 Formatting Utility and download that utility and use it.

Lets know how you get on.
