If it’s only an upgrade XP, I think you should preceed like that :
      Save everything you need
      fdisk – break partition
      Bare install W98
insert XP upgrade and follow instructions.
When prompted, convert into NTFS format.

You need a Win 95/98 boot disk to run format c: Then you can install Win95/98 as mentioned above, then you can upgrade to WinXP.

      Use a W98 startup floppy.

Run fdisk, and delete the primary DOS or non-dos partition.

Boot from the XP home CD.
(If you cannot boot from the CD, you can download the file to create the boot floppy set from Microsoft.)

      Install XP.

At some point, you will be asked to insert your old version of Windows.
This MUST be a W98, Me, or W2K CD.

      The installation will then complete.

Now, why do you want to change from XP Pro to XP Home?

XP Home is actually a down-grade from XP Pro.
XP Pro can do everything that XP Home can and more.
The primary difference being networking and system security is much better on XP Pro than on XP Home.

Boot with the XP Home CD and select to repair the installation. Then select Recovery Console. Select the correct partition and enter the Admin Password. Then at the prompt type: Format C:. Answer yes to the confirmation prompts and thats it!
